It provides an immediate indication that a message reached the inbox and generated enough interest for someone to engage with it, giving marketers a convenient way to compare campaigns, evaluate subject lines, and track audience behavior over time.

The metric has also become considerably more complicated. Privacy protections, image proxies, automated image loading, caching, and other inbox technologies can influence whether an open is recorded without providing a clear indication of what an individual subscriber actually did.

That doesn’t eliminate the value of open data. It changes how marketers should interpret it and makes the relationship between opens and what happens next increasingly important.

Rising Open Rates Don’t Always Mean Rising Engagement

Recent benchmark data illustrates the challenge.

Zeta Global’s Q2 2026 Marketing Benchmark Report found that total email open rates increased 6.7% year over year, while unique open rates increased 2.1% to 40.6%. At first glance, those numbers suggest that marketers are getting more subscribers to engage with their messages.

Another measure moved in the opposite direction. Zeta’s “true open rate,” which is designed to exclude server preloading activity, declined 10.2% year over year to 10.7%.

That divergence demonstrates why a single open-rate number can be difficult to interpret. Some recorded opens reflect human activity, while others may result from the way an inbox provider retrieves and displays email content. At the same time, caching and other technologies can make some subsequent activity less visible.

Marketers therefore have more context to consider when an open rate rises or falls. Changes in campaign strategy and subscriber behavior may still contribute, but the inbox environment itself can also influence the number appearing in the report.

What an Open Can Still Tell You

The limitations surrounding open tracking don’t make the metric meaningless. Open rates can still provide useful directional information, particularly when marketers compare similar campaigns, examine trends over time, and understand how their email platform handles automated activity.

The key is matching the metric to the question being asked.

An unusual decline in opens may warrant a closer look at deliverability, sender recognition, subject lines, audience composition, or inbox placement. Differences between campaigns sent to comparable audiences may also help marketers identify patterns worth investigating.

Open data becomes less useful when it is treated as definitive evidence of individual subscriber intent. A recorded open does not necessarily mean someone actively read a message, just as the absence of a recorded open does not always prove that someone ignored it.

That distinction becomes particularly important when open behavior is used to make decisions about individual subscribers. Segmentation, re-engagement programs, lead scoring, and automated journeys can all be affected when an open event is treated as a precise indication of customer interest.

Put Opens Alongside Stronger Engagement Measures

A more complete view of email performance comes from looking at what subscribers do after delivery and considering how those actions connect with campaign objectives.

Depending on the type of email, marketers might examine:

Unique click rate. Clicking typically reflects a more deliberate action and can help show whether recipients found enough value in the message to continue engaging.

Click-to-open rate. While still dependent on open measurement, this metric can provide additional context about how effectively an email generates interaction among recorded openers.

Conversions. Purchases, registrations, downloads, appointments, and other desired outcomes connect email activity more directly to the purpose of the campaign.

Website and customer behavior. Browsing activity, account actions, product usage, and other first-party interactions can help marketers understand whether email engagement continues beyond the click.

Longer-term trends. Repeat purchases, retention, sustained engagement, and customer lifetime value can provide another perspective on whether email is contributing to an ongoing customer relationship.

No single measure needs to replace the open rate. Even before today’s privacy protections and inbox technologies, an open could tell marketers that a tracking pixel loaded, but it could not reveal how carefully someone read the message, whether the content changed their perception of the brand, or whether they intended to return later.

Today’s inbox environment makes those limitations harder to overlook. Apple Mail Privacy Protection can load remote content without confirming that someone actively viewed the message, while Gmail’s image proxy can obscure device, location, and repeat-open information. These technologies were developed for different purposes, but both affect what marketers can infer from traditional tracking.

That makes context increasingly valuable. Marketers can examine open trends while also considering clicks, conversions, website activity, purchase behavior, and other customer interactions. Over time, those combined measures can provide a more complete picture of how email contributes to engagement.

Open rate can still have a place in that picture. A meaningful change may identify something worth investigating, and historical trends can help marketers understand how campaigns are performing relative to their own established patterns. The number simply carries less certainty than its familiar presentation in an email dashboard might suggest.

As email measurement evolves, the opportunity is to become more deliberate about what each metric can actually tell us. Opens can indicate activity. Clicks can demonstrate stronger intent. Conversions can connect a campaign to an outcome. Customer behavior over time can show whether those interactions are contributing to a lasting relationship.

Together, those measures provide something more useful than any single number: the context needed to understand what subscribers are actually doing after an email arrives.

Ready to See WhatCounts in Action?

         Request a Demo

Email Opens Are Up.
