107 Trillion Email Marketing Messages

Happy birthday Listserv! Twenty-five years ago in 1986, email list management and messaging software Listserv was created by Eric Thomas. Before Listserv was created, if someone wanted to join an email list, they had to wait for someone to painstakingly adjust the code to include them in the messages.

Wow, email, and email marketing has come a long way over the last 25 years.  Let’s take a quick look at the numbers:

Fastcompany.com recently wrote an article stating that in 2010 we humans sent 107 trillion email (marketing) messages, shared 36 billion photos on Facebook, posted 25 billion tweets on Twitter, but only sent 170 billion pieces of mail.  I know what you are thinking, “I got 50 billion pieces of mail in my mailbox myself!”  The reality is the world is becoming more and more digital which will continue to create opportunities for marketers of all types including our beloved email marketing clients.

For email marketers that use email marketing software to communicate with their current and prospective customers an interesting fact in the article is that in 1985, 90% of all email was business related.  Today, just 8% of email messages are business related.  Email marketing has grown rapidly over the last several decades – because – it works.
