Panic in the parking lot: The importance of patient education

About a week ago, the following note was posted outside the door of my daughter’s preschool class:

“Your child has been in contact with someone with a confirmed case of H1N1 influenza.”

While there was more information regarding signs and symptoms to watch for and preventive measures, the scene in the parking lot after school was one of panic and worry. I can only imagine the number of phone calls to the pediatrician offices in the area that day. Several of the other parents were aware that I am a nurse practitioner and came to me for information. I could see some relief in their eyes as I answered their questions and shared information.

Equipping patients and family members with the right H1N1 information can decrease anxiety and help them to make appropriate decisions. Lippincott’s NursingCenter.com and the Anatomical Chart Company have partnered to create a tool with simple text and graphics for clinicians and health educators to give to their patients. The handout, available in both English and Spanish, will help patients learn the facts, including signs and symptoms, how the infection spreads, treatment options, and prevention methods for H1N1.
